NEWS & REVIEWS
We caught up with Quinn, frontperson of Connecticut pop-punk band Cinema Stare, to talk about vulnerability, activism, and building a scene rooted in care. From channeling anxiety and anger into their newest track, “Plus Ultra!”, to creating safe, joyful spaces for their fans, Quinn opens up about what it means to keep punk political, collaborative, unapologetically human, and what that means for the future of the scene.
Growing up, we would have decade days in school: would you show up as a 70's hippie or an 80's disco kid? We saw our parents escape to 80's nights to relive their youth. We grew up witnessing the pull of nostalgia, long before we had a name for it. As our generation grew up, we found our own version of that release through Emo Nite.
Ryan Styles interviews Betty Mauritz of Gold Steps, exploring the band's journey from their beginnings in Austin, Texas, to their current success in Milwaukee. They discuss the challenges and triumphs of being a pop punk band, the influence of other bands, and the personal growth and resilience required to thrive in the music industry. Betty shares insights into their songwriting process, the impact of their music, and their plans for the future, including new releases and tours.
Welcome to episode 103 of the Emo Kids Anonymous Podcast. On todays episode, I'm joined by The Bald. Who is The Bald you may ask? Well, I'm still not totally sure to be honest.
Every emo kid knows that music is the most elite form of therapy. Belting your feelings out loud alongside your favorite band will heal you in ways even the best therapist can’t touch. My friends of The Great American Typewriter took this a beat further when in 2022, after the loss of a mutual friend, they came together to channel their feelings into the same sort of music that has saved so many of us. The Great American Typewriter makes music that feels good, rather than music that will sell. They play for the joy of creating together, and the outcome is fantastic. The heart of their sound is full and poppy, though they borrow from just about every sub-genre under the sun to bring fans an eclectic and nicely balanced trip into the nostalgic past. In their time together, The Great American Typewriter have produced a handful of singles, an ep, and one full-length record, So Much for Dreams; all great listens in this writer’s opinion. This band is sure to get emo kids (both growing and overgrown) all in their feels in the best possible way.
I recently spoke with Chris, guitarist of Bakersfield pop-punk band In Balance, to talk about writing fast, technical punk, staying true to their sound, and the moments that make their live shows unforgettable. From hometown pride to happy studio accidents on their new single “Two Steps Behind,” Chris gives a candid look at what makes In Balance work so well.
On this episode we have on media and film composer Andrew Morgan Smith. We talked about how he has 6 kids, family dynamics with that many kids, teaching your kids empathy and kindness, teaching your kids calming techniques when they have a panic attack, trying to keep friends as an adult, and his life as a film and media composer.
Welcome to episode 102 of EKA! Today we are joined by Ms. Town, Tori of Tori Town. She tells us about her recent legal battles involving the town of Holyoake and her fight to keep hosting house shows, a cause we wholeheartedly approve.
Do you live for songs that sound like worn out Vans, band tees, and way-too-skinny jeans? If so, I think I’ve found your new favorite artist. Joey CXP is everything you love about early 2000’s pop-punk; familiar-feeling riffs, relatable lyrics, melodies that make you want to move your feet and sing loud and proud in the car with the windows down.
Welcome to Episode 101 of Emo Kids Anonymous! Today we are joined by 2000's power pop sensations The Click Five. Joe, Kyle and Ethan were kind enough to dive deep into the history of the band.
About a year ago to the week, I posted about wanting to start a podcast and was curious if anyone wanted to cohost. Some FOB fan responded to me and now here we are, 100 episodes of later.
Here are the Never A Phase Network recommended new music releases for the week of January 10-16.
One thing as emo kids we can all agree on is how much we love a good trio. Three musicians, three songs on a LP, three bands playing a show, there’s something (apparently) innately punk about the number three. In keeping with that sacred trend, please allow me to introduce the next three-piece you’re going to want on your playlist: Reckless Giants. Jeremy (lead vocals/guitar), John (vocals), and Coty (drums) bring the brightest Florida sunshine to their pop punk jam with fun, energetic melodies and playful, sincere lyrics. Their vocal-forward sound stands out against the emo revival masses, earning them opening spots with beloved acts including Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Winona Fighter, and even collaboration with We The Kings. These self-described “backwoods pop punkers” have already started to make their mark on the scene; dropping over 10 singles since 2021 (including a delightful Christmas track) and an ear-catching EP earlier this year.
